Designing “Rumble in the Jungle II” on Robben Island
Some projects are remarkable not because they conclude, but because of how far you take them against all odds.
Together with Zenani Mandela, I helped design what could have been the most significant boxing event of the modern era: a heavyweight title fight between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson, staged on Robben Island in the very quarry where Nelson Mandela spent so many of his prison years. The vision was to create a global sporting moment that merged heavyweight boxing, African heritage and a powerful message of reconciliation.
Turning that idea into a serious, executable proposal required taking it to the highest levels of the sport and politics.
We travelled to Lennox Lewis’s training camp in the Pocono Mountains, where we sat down with Lennox and his legendary trainer, Emanuel Steward. Both responded enthusiastically to the concept, and Lennox agreed in principle to the bout—an essential first step.
From there, the work moved into governance and sanctioning. Over the following months, we:
-
Met with sanctioning bodies across multiple jurisdictions, including Coral Gables, Mexico City and New Jersey, to secure their formal support and blessing for the fight.
-
Positioned the bout as “Rumble in the Jungle II”: a successor to the iconic Ali–Foreman clash in Zaire, but with a deeper historical and moral dimension through its Robben Island setting.
-
Worked under, and with, the explicit blessing and backing of Nelson Mandela, who saw in the event a unique opportunity to showcase South Africa’s story of struggle and transformation on a world stage.
The project advanced to the point where the key ingredients were in place: broad sanctioning‑body support, principal fighter commitment on one side, political endorsement at the highest level, and a compelling narrative that spoke far beyond sport.
Ultimately, the event did not proceed. Despite international momentum, our application for a local boxing promoter’s licence in South Africa was denied, and the project was effectively blocked at home. It was a reminder that even the most powerful ideas must pass through narrow gates of regulation, vested interests and timing.
Yet the experience remains one of the most instructive of my career. It required:
-
Negotiating with world champions and hall‑of‑fame trainers
-
Securing alignment from multiple global governing bodies
-
Balancing political, commercial and ethical considerations
-
Operating with discretion and resolve in an environment of intense scrutiny and conflicting agendas
For clients today, this chapter is more than an anecdote. It demonstrates what it takes to move an audacious concept from imagination to the edge of reality; how to operate at the intersection of sport, politics and global media; and how to maintain composure and integrity even when a once‑in‑a‑lifetime project is ultimately stopped for reasons beyond your control.
Not every visionary project reaches the bell. But the calibre of the journey—and the rooms you are trusted to enter—still says everything about the level at which you are able to operate.
