Empowering Youth Through the Songo Foundation
One of the projects I am proudest of does not appear on a balance sheet. It stands on the edge of a township in Stellenbosch.
Together with Songo Fipaza and multiple world champion Christoph Sauser, I helped turn a simple idea—giving underprivileged children a real chance to thrive—into a permanent, physical reality: the Songo Foundation (www.songo.info).
My role was to provide the seed capital and the hard asset that could anchor the vision. I took an old, derelict building on site, used its existing foundations, and company completely rebuilt it into the clubhouse and school the foundation uses today: a purpose‑built space where children can learn, be mentored, and discover a world beyond the limits of their circumstances. It is a modest structure by global standards, but in its context it is transformational.
Under Songo’s day‑to‑day leadership and Christoph’s hands‑on guidance, that building has grown into a vibrant community hub. It now serves hundreds of children, offering programmes that combine:
-
Education and academic support
-
Health and nutrition awareness
-
Structured sport and cycling, with world‑class role models
-
Life‑skills and personal development
The impact is cumulative and generational. Children who might once have had little more than survival on their horizon now have access to tutoring, mentorship, safe spaces and a framework for ambition. The foundation has become a catalyst in the community—lifting not only the participants, but also inspiring others to contribute time, skills and resources.
For me, this project reinforced a simple belief: capital has its highest value when it builds something that outlasts the person who gave it. The Songo clubhouse and school are exactly that—an enduring asset in a community that needs it most, run by leaders who live the mission every day.
My wider charitable focus has always followed the same principle: targeted, high‑leverage interventions in education, health and community development that create sustainable change rather than momentary relief. The Songo Foundation is a clear example of that approach in action.
As the foundation continues to grow, my hope is that its story encourages others—individuals, families, corporations—to deploy some portion of their own success in similarly catalytic ways. When you invest in the right people and give them the infrastructure to work with, the return is measured not in percentages, but in lives changed.
