Construction as a Stepping Stone: A Conversation with Justin Abdoo
One of the questions I enjoy asking guests on my podcast is a simple one: when you think about long-term wealth and legacy, what role does investment property play in your life?
Justin Abdoo, founder of Abdoo Construction, gave one of the most considered answers I have heard.
For Justin, investment property is quite simply the best route there is. Yet rather than buying straight away, he has chosen to build a general contracting business first. Many of his friends went directly into property management and investment, and he respects that. His view is that construction is his stepping stone: the place where he is learning how buildings are designed, costed, financed and delivered, before he moves into owning them.
I find a great deal of wisdom in that. Too many people enter property knowing the price of an asset but very little about how it is made. Someone who has managed a build, negotiated with suppliers and dealt with the realities of a site brings a different quality of judgement to every acquisition that follows. They know what a sound structure looks like, what a realistic timeline is, and where costs tend to hide.
Justin summed it up well. Owning assets, he said, is priceless. It is something you simply have to have in your portfolio.
I agree entirely. Property has been my work since 2003, and in that time I have seen people arrive by many different paths. Some inherit a portfolio, some buy their first flat, and some, like Justin, spend years in the trade before they ever hold a title deed. There is no single correct route. What matters is having a clear destination and a disciplined plan for reaching it.
At Asset Acquisition Partners we work with investors at every stage of that journey, and conversations like this one are exactly why I started Accessible Paths to Financial Freedom.
What has been your own stepping stone towards owning property? I would be glad to hear it.
